Project Title  :  Improvement of livelihoods of disadvantaged indigenous communities through climate-smart agriculture in rural Gajapati District, Odisha, India

Project Goal
Improvement of Livelihood 930 marginalised disadvantaged indigenous communities of 13 villages of Gumma (6 villages) and Kasinagara block (7 villages) of Gajapati District, Odisha through climate smart agriculture. 


Project Activities implemented so far


65 ha. Wasteland was converted to cultivable land by 320 small farmers and the farmers are cultivating Paddy, Ragi, Ground nut, Black gram, Green gram, Sunflower, Arhar and Vegetables in organic way.  

66.60 ha land was constructed with Farm bund / Stone bund by 352 small farmers for soil & water conservation.  The farmers are cultivating Paddy, Ragi, Casava, Hill Brooms, Turmeric and vegetables with organic farming.

50 small farmers have promoted Agro-forestry, Fruit and Vegetable cultivation in 20.10 ha using organic compost and organic fertilizer.

192 tribal farmers were provided Drip / Bucket kit irrigation equipments.  They are cultivating Onion, Tomato, Beat, Beans, Pumpkin and green leaves with organic inputs.  The farmers are cultivating 3 times crop in a year and getting INR 4500 to INR 10000

791 households were supported vegetable seeds to promote backyard kitchen garden / home garden.  They are cultivating Radish, Okra, Brinjal, Ridge Guard, Bottle guard, Chilly and other green leaves.  80% of the organic vegetables are consuming by themselves and 20% are selling in their villages. 

The project is focusing on improve the nutrition status of the children aged between 0 - 6 years.  In the project area there are 153 undernourished children were identified with the active cooperation of frontline health workers.  CCD is orienting the parents on nutrition food intake on regular basis like green vegetables, green leaves, millets and non-veg items.

13 Women SHGs were provided Agri-Equipments for their income generation.  They are providing the agri-equipments to the needy farmers on hiring basis with marginal price.  A fixed rate chart was prepared by the SHGs and affixed at village and godown centre.

280 small farmers were supported farm equipments to improve their agriculture activities and also providing the equipments to other farmers on hiring basis.

120 farmers were supported quality seeds like Ground nut, Green Gram and Black gram.  They are cultivating with organic process and using for consumption.  The surplus are selling in the village and nearby villages.

446 compost pits were constructed by the household.  They are collecting the organic compost from their pit and using in their field to improve the soil fertility.  Around 1 to 1.5 qtl of compost is collected by each farmer from one compost pit.

112 vulnerable / landless / Persons with Disability households were supported 4 - 5 breeding Goats each to improve their household income status.  They are taking care of the Goats with routine vaccination in consultation with veterinary departments.  The farmers are selling one goat @ INR 8000.  Till now 8 goats were sold @ INR 64000

20 landless / vulnerable households were supported Bee keeping unit.  15 households have collected honey of 44 liter.  They are selling @ INR 600 per liter each and got INR 26400

188 farmers have promoted model farm in 25.15 ha and transplanted Mango, Banana, Coconut, Guava, Drum Stick.  The fruiting period  will be started after 3 years.   The income from Banana and Drumstick is come up @ 3000.

Farmers Producers Organization

CCD has promoted Ujayalla Farmers Producers Company consisting of 202 tribal farmers in the project area. Our efforts is continuing to enroll more than 500 tribal farmers as the shareholders of the FPO. Now the FPO is procuring Ragi from the tribal farmers and selling at Mandi Point with Government MSP. The farmers are getting profit and the FPO also getting the margin price. The main role of the FPO for collective marketing of agro-horti-Non-Timber forest produces in fair price so that the middlemen dominancy will be reduced. Orientation is going on at village level to make aware of the tribal farmers on the role and responsibilities of FPO and the ownership of each shareholder. The tribal farmers and Board of Directors are involving in decision making process and also market study. Village level campaign and Orientation is going on preparation of business development plan.

District-level workshop to FPO members on Business Development Plan

Two days District level workshop has been conducted for the Ujayalla Farmers Producers' Company members to capacitate the members on FPO management, market study, market linkages, statutory compliances, and preparation of a Business Development Plan. The resource persons from Amanki Foundation Trust, Bhubaneswar have facilitated the program. DDM, NABARD, Gajapati District has participated and informed various schemes of Government for FPO strengthening and resource mobilization. The FPO members and FPO management staff were made aware of the collective procurement and marketing of agro-horti and NTF products of smallholder farmers to ensure fair market price as well as to prevent them from distress sale and middlemen dominancy.
